My characters seem to drink a lot. Well, it is the forties. One day I wandered over to Warehouse Wines and Spirits on Broadway near 8th Street in the Village and asked one of the experts there what kind of wine people would have drunk in this country in the forties. He told me the only wine they would have been able to get was Louis Jadot Beaujolais. For the average wine drinker there was no such thing as white wine or even a selection of red wines. These types came from France and Italy and were too expensive to import at the time. If you were a regular Joe or Jane stopping for a glass of wine in your local cocktail lounge during the 1940s your wine would be red, only red and only one kind.
